Who Knows Advertising Best; An Advertising Salesman or an Entrepreneur Paying for It

⊆ August 12th, 2008 by admin | ˜ No Comments »

Often we read articles on the Internet about business from some pretty seasoned veterans indeed. Unfortunately all too often the people writing these articles are self proclaimed Gurus of marketing or advertising, who are not seasoned entrepreneurs. In fact very few seasoned entrepreneurs have any reason to write about such things unless they are completely retired and therefore writing a biography or have switched careers.

So, really who knows Advertising Best; an Advertising Salesman or an Entrepreneur who has spent his career writing checks to pay for it? It is a good question indeed. Why should this be an issue you ask? Well, some advertising salesmen have had some formal education in advertising, human psychology and consumer buying behavior and they trump these brain-washing exercises claiming they make them experts, which makes sense because if they are trying to sell something it helps to be called an expert.

But in reality does this make them the all-knowing guru of advertising? No, because things change and the degree and information they had learned is no-longer relevant. Where as with an Entrepreneur, they write the checks, talk to customers and they know where their business is coming from. They know what works, what is a waste of money and what simply does not pull in clientele.

Consider if you for a moment that bad advertising is pure cost and no relevant results and good advertising pays for its self and increases sales by bringing in new customers, building brand and allowing for future expansion. This issue is so important to your business and the reason I suggest that you take what an advertising salesman has to say with a grain of salt and listen to your instincts and fellow entrepreneurs. Oh, and stay away from large Yellow Page advertising ads, as there are better ways.
